“Channel Zero” coming to SyFy

July 3, 2015 By Horror Palace Leave a Comment

channel-one-featureUNIVERSAL CABLE PRODUCTIONS AND SYFY ANNOUNCE DEVELOPMENT OF “CHANNEL ZERO” HORROR ANTHOLOGY SERIES FROM MAX LANDIS AND NICK ANTOSCA

UNIVERSAL CITY, CA – June 30, 2015 – Universal Cable Productions (UCP) and Syfy today announced the development of “Channel Zero” with Nick Antosca (“Hannibal,” “Friday the 13th”) set to write the script, and Max Landis (“Chronicle,” “American Ultra”) set to produce and helm creative direction along with Antosca.

“Channel Zero” will feature a unique setup, with each season focusing on a new story. The first season of the horror anthology series for Syfy will be based on “Candle Cove” by Kris Straub, a story that originates from the user-generated internet horror phenomenon known as creepypasta. It tells the story of a mysterious children’s television show from the 1980s and the show’s role in a series of murders and one man’s dark secret.

“’Channel Zero: Candle Cove’ is a season long imaginative and chilling horror anthology,” said Dawn Olmstead, Executive Vice President of Development, Universal Cable Productions. “With its first story deriving from the cult favorite creepypasta, and the visionary minds of Landis and Antosca, it is elevated horror at its best. I’m still haunted by the first episode. It’s a chilling immersive ride.”

Bill McGoldrick, Executive Vice President, Original Content for Syfy, said, “’Channel Zero: Candle Cove’ will feature contemporary storytelling and an innovative perspective that underscores Syfy’s commitment to bringing smart and provocative programming to a whole new generation of sci fi fans.”

“We love the idea of doing seasons of TV like rich, character-driven horror novels, and for ‘Channel Zero: Candle Cove’ we’ve expanded this great short story ‘Candle Cove’ into something really nightmarish and haunting and surreal,” said Landis and Antosca. “We can’t wait to dig in deeper and bring this to life with Syfy and Universal Cable Productions.”

“Channel Zero” joins an array of current high profile UCP and Syfy collaborations, including “Childhood’s End,” the first-ever adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke’s iconic novel starring Charles Dance, Mike Vogel and Julian McMahon; “Brave New World,” based on Aldous Huxley’s classic novel which is being developed alongside Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television; “The Magicians,” based on Lev Grossman’s popular trilogy; and Wes Craven’s “The People Under The Stairs,” based on the 1991 film; and “We Are All Completely Fine,” based on book by Daryl Gregory.

Ray Bradbury’s Pillar Of Fire Featuring Bill Oberst, Jr. Solo Show

May 30, 2015 By Horror Palace Leave a Comment

EC-Comics-Ray-BradburyLos Angeles, CA (May 28, 2015): Once upon a time, when Americans burned their horror comics, a young man named Ray Bradbury fought back with his typewriter…and a story about a living corpse.

Actor Bill Oberst Jr.‘s  (a Horror Palace faborite!)theatrical reading of Ray Bradbury’s Pillar Of Fire opens in Los Angeles on June 5,  the anniversary of the avthor’s death. It runs through June 25 at two Hollywood area theaters. Details and ticket information on the performance are at www.hollywoodfringe.org/projects/2496.

Pillar Of Fire is set in the year 2349 on an Earth cleansed of all superstition – a place where Halloween, dark literature and burials are banned. Bodies are burned without ceremony in massive towers of cremation; the ashes of the forgotten dead blown into the wind. As Bradbury’s tale opens, the last cemetery on the planet is nearly emptied when the last dead man in the world wakes up. William Lantry is a 400 year-old walking corpse filled with hate for the living and determined to teach this sterile and sensible world the meaning of fear.

Oberst, a rabid Bradbury fan, says he hopes to tour with Pillar Of Fire and other Bradbury stories. “Vincent Price used to tour the world with living renditions of Poe’s works that delighted fans. I’d like to do the same with Ray Bradbury” he says.  “These LA shows are a test. I want to prove that fans will respond to great horror and fantasy literature done live.” Oberst says he especially hopes to make a tour of American libraries as a way of honoring Bradbury’s lifelong love affair with books.

Bradbury wrote the story in 1948 as comics like Tales From The Crypt, The Vault Of Horror and The Haunt Of Fear were being thrown into bonfires after a psychiatrist attacked them as morally corrupt in a best-selling book. “The campaign to cleanse young minds caught fire” says Oberst “and that’s the atmosphere in which Bradbury created Pillar Of Fire, which makes the case that we need the dark in order to to balance the light. It’s a passionate defense of Halloween and things that go bump in the night. I hope fans will support it if they are in Los Angeles in June. We who work in the darker genres still take heat from those who look down on us, but Ray Bradbury wasn’t ashamed to have his name associated with horror, neither am I.”
