Devil Let Me Go (Book Review)

October 19, 2013 By Horror Palace Leave a Comment

Devil Let My Go - Horror Book Review“Devil Let Me Go,” written by Nathan Robinson, is a book that contains thirteen unique and haunting short stories.  Many of the stories were previously published and unite in this book to create one astounding collection of well written storylines, however there are a couple that remained unpublished up until the release of this compilation.  While the main focus of his work is telling tales of horror, Robinson writes in a way that addresses the needs of every reader, covering themes that will delight people of different personalities, interests and ages.  These thirteen stories really come together to create an exciting, fast-paced grouping that provides quick, entertaining reads that anyone with an appetite for fear will be sure to enjoy.

Robinson’s writing style throughout the different stories included in “Devil Let Me Go” is pleasantly varied yet consistently of high quality, accompanying suitable stories with different tones and feeling to make the characters come to life.  There are elements of fear, compassion, rage, horror, and much more.  The author does an excellent job of evoking feeling in his readers by adjusting his approach to writing as per what each moment of each story needs, whether it be more raw and explicit descriptions or warm and touching expressions of characters’ feelings.  For example, in the story “The House that Creak’d,” we witness the main character love, experience loneliness and loss, and confront a community of the dead who are seemingly out to get him.  Overall, Robinson’s ability to adapt to exquisitely write such a widely varied assortment of plotlines demonstrates his incredible writing skills.

Also, this book is suitable for readers of all types.  The various stories cover multiple genres which means that there is something for everyone.  However, it was surprising how successful Robinson is in also converting readers to fans of new categories of writing.  Through his impactful story telling abilities, Robinson makes it easy to enjoy stories and characters that readers may not have anticipated liking based on the books they have enjoyed in the past.  There is not a single story in the book that cannot successfully entertain any reader who enjoys horror tales.  Furthermore, Robinson takes advantage of his expansive vocabulary and unparalleled ability to create strong imagery with his words to bring each and every story to life for readers, creating a unique reading experience every time.

These thirteen stories are sure to pull you in to a world that you never expected to find yourself placed in, introducing sometimes terrifying places and people that will keep you feeling alive and present.  Each tale is different and creative, negating the notion of repetition that some books of story collections can bring forth when their different plotlines have striking similarities.  Robinson has ensured that each character, story and setting both sound and feel different to his audience, helping to keep readers not only engaged but constantly on edge wondering what will happen next.

Overall, I highly recommend the book “Devil Let Me Go,” written by Nathan Robinson.  It includes an assortment of thirteen well-written stories that are suitable for all types of readers and cover multiple genres, centering in around the theme of horror and fear.  This scary element makes for an interesting and chilling experience while reading, thereby adding to the excitement of each storyline.  Furthermore, this book contains the cream of the crop in terms of selection of Robinson’s work while also including a few new releases.  This is a fantastic compilation of writing that will let you escape fearfully to worlds you may be scared to find yourself in, giving just a taste of what it feels like to live life on the dark side.

Night Sea Journey (Book Review)

October 13, 2013 By Horror Palace Leave a Comment

A Tale of the Supernatural

Night Sea Journey-book coverThe book “Night Sea Journey: A Tale of the Supernatural,” written by Paula Cappa, is a powerful story that intertwines genres including romance, adventure, horror and sometimes even fantasy. The main character, Kip Livingston, has inexplicably strange and terrifying dreams of which the memories control her happiness while awake and begin to affect her everyday life. Cappa does an outstanding job of bringing this complex and supernatural plot to life, throwing her readers into an unfamiliar, scary and magical world. Also, the fact that the book encompasses multiple genres makes it suitable for all types of readers.

This book tells a creative, mystical, captivating story about a girl named Kip Livingston and her bizarre dreams. She lives by herself in Abasteron House on Horn Island near the sea and often finds herself in her nightmares, battling with snakes or a terrifying animal with wings, even shooting them dead and consequently having to bury them in the sand by the shore. She speaks with a psychologist about her problems with these recurring and chillingly real feeling nightmares and while they try to convince her that these supernatural experiences are not a reality but simply a figment of her sleeping imagination, this is unfathomable for Kip. Later, a priest who has been sent away to Horn Island, Raymond Kera, falls for Kip. Her nightmares then begin to affect Raymond’s own dreams and this leads to danger. It is an extremely fast-paced, intense read with an unpredictable plot line that will keep your mind racing.

Paula Cappa does an exquisite job of telling this story. The actual concept behind the story line is highly complicated and imaginative, making it hard to effectively convey to readers. However, Cappa’s strong ability to clearly articulate ideas through detailed descriptions, powerful metaphors, rich imagery and logical explanation make the book far easier to read and understand than many authors could pull off. The notion of dreams cracking through to a person’s realm of reality is clearly described without being explicitly stated, demonstrating Cappa’s superior writing skills. Her ability to write this particular story to be so profound and thorough was perhaps one of the most impressive things about the book.

Furthermore, this is a novel that evokes numerous feelings for the reader which adds to the excitement of reading the story. Given that it covers a wide range of genres at various parts, the book taps in to many emotions including sadness, romance, happiness, fear, and confusion, to name a few. There are times where the story speaks of love, violence, paranormal experiences, gangs, death and more. This variety makes the novel a piece of writing that fans of many categories of writing can appreciate and get lost in.

In summary, I definitely recommend the book “Night Sea Journey: A Tale of the Supernatural,” written by Paula Cappa. It is an astoundingly creative read that blends numerous genres in to one comprehensive story about the life of a girl and her terrifying nightmares that begin to break through into her world of reality. While the ideas behind the plot line are undeniably complex in nature, Cappa takes advantage of this to enrich the story and does a great job of explaining every last detail the reader needs to understand in the book. Ultimately, she produces a book that can steal the attention of any reader, speaking to those who enjoy all sorts of genres using just one story. This is a suspenseful, romantic, mystical tale that is sure to impress all readers who appreciate a plot that can really make them stop and think.

We Are Wormwood (Book Review)

October 10, 2013 By Horror Palace Leave a Comment

WeAreWormwood-coverWe are Wormwood strikes me as a cross between Stephen King and the movie Sucker Punch. It has the dark, gruesome aspects of King and it walks the thin line between reality and fantasy like Sucker Punch. It doesn’t have what I feel is King’s sense of detachment—it seems like he can describe the most appalling scene as though reading a weather report (something I admire).

Here the narration is in the first person and there is a great deal of emotional investment throughout the whole story. The reader has no choice but to be drawn in and feel what Lily is feeling. Because it’s told from Lily’s point of view, this emotional writing is a much better choice.

When the book begins she is a child and as she grows she becomes more and more removed from reality. A clinical narrator would not suit this tale. It has an out-of-this-world feel which is appropriate considering it’s a glimpse into the perspective of someone who is schizophrenic. The imagery is amazingly detailed and the story jumps from straight narration to a play to a letter and back to narration. The variety in story-telling complements the bizarre story being told. You cannot predict what will happen next, but it’s still a story you can follow.

Christian shows great skill in weaving a tale that’s incredibly complex and imaginative while keeping it grounded enough for a reader to keep up. Too often writers are trying so hard to create a unique story that they lose the reader along the way. While Christian challenges your imagination to broaden, you never throw your hands up in frustration because you have absolutely no idea what’s going on.

Autumn Christian
Author Autumn Christian lives in a dark woods  surrounded by poisonous blue flowers.

The story begins without much exposition which is great for the type of book it is. You walk into a story already in progress and learn as you go. It keeps the story moving quickly and it starts you off with a little chaos and lack of clarity; things that will only continue to grow. Most of the other characters are distant; their stories left out. It keeps you focused on Lily; you shouldn’t and won’t find yourself attached to the supporting cast members. The only other character with in-depth attention throughout is her demon. This creature has followed her around her entire life and ages with her. Because of the large role this character plays, the reader will know her best after Lily. Yet for all the demon’s presence, it is really only Lily the reader has a chance to connect with. It’s all about Lily, just like the unique world she lives in.

The storyline is heart breaking and dark. I’d recommend it to anyone except people who really can’t stomach gore; this story overflows with it. I have no problem with these sorts of stories personally, but I could see this being an issue for some. If you can handle that, though, this book creates a whole new world worth reading about. It provides a glimpse into the minds of schizophrenics which is rare, though incredibly sad. Lily acknowledges many times throughout the book that she’s probably just like her mother who also suffers from the illness, but she cannot accept that her reality isn’t real. Even when it’s terrible and life-threatening. The power of her mind is amazing; she builds a whole cast of characters to fulfill her story—a story that is not ideal for anyone, let alone herself. She is her own worst enemy and no matter how much you cheer for her (and you will) you know things are just going to get worse as you go on. In spite of this, I didn’t want to put the book down. It’s a rabbit hole you have to see through to the bottom, and you won’t be disappointed.

I won’t go into specifics about the ending, but in the end you feel that Christian leaves a lot up to the reader. Typically I am not a fan of these open-ended endings; I like to know what the storyteller sees as the end. But it is very appropriate here. The reader has gone on such a strange, fantastic voyage here and there are just too many questions to answers. The reader will have already made several decisions along the way. Considering that the story is a testament to the power of one girl’s mind, it’s the right choice to let the reader’s imagination fill in the remaining blanks.

Linnea Quigley Scream Queen

October 9, 2013 By Horror Palace Leave a Comment

All About Hollywood’s Original Scream Queen

Linnea Quigley Hollywood Chainsaw HookersAmerica’s one and only, “Scream Queen” – This is how we would like to introduce one of the top B-horror film actresses, Linnea Quigley. Even though, the actress has done over 100 movies in her acting career, her 90 second longest scream and exotic dance in her breakthrough movie, became her trademarks. Even so, Linnea Quigley has always been seen as a woman of substance. She is a gorgeous woman, often seen in scary situations in her movies. Whether it is the horrors of inhuman, or darkness of the human spirits, the splendid “Scream” beauty has faced it all, leaving the imprints of her character in everyone’s horror heart.

Early Life and Relationships

Born in Davenport, Iowa on May 27th, 1958, Linnea Quigley was an only child.

She was born to Heath Quigley, a chiropractor/psychiatrist and Dorothy Quigley, a homemaker. Most of her early childhood years were spent in Iowa, but in 1970s the family moved to Los Angeles, United States. This marked a turning point in Quigley’s life. Soon after the relocation, in 1978 the actress got her first acting break. Even though, she never dreamt of being an actress, she couldn’t resist the offer when it was presented. Linnea started getting work in B-horror movies and thus, soon became the first choice of director’s working on horror flicks in the 80’s.

Not much had been written about Linnea’s personal life. During her career, she wasn’t linked with any specific personality from the industry. However, in the year 1990, she married Steve Johnson, a special effects wizard. The marriage came out as a sudden shock to many, but didn’t last much longer than a horror flick sequel. The couple separated in 1992. Rumor has it, Linnea was very disturbed with her broken marriage and for a long time she couldn’t get over the past.Linnea Quigley Chainsaw Original

In 2001, she moved to Florida to stay close to her parents. It was reported that Linnea wanted to take some time off from her regular schedule, and moving to Florida was a part of her rejuvenation process and getting some scenic change in her life.

How Did Movies Happen To Her – Her Step In To Hollywood

She started her modeling career at the age of 15 with a television commercial, and soon started getting offers for horror films. The struggling period for the actress did not last long and in 1975, she bagged her first role in a small budget movie Wheeler, also known as The Psycho from Texas. The role was small, but her acting skills were highly acclaimed. The part brought her notoriety and she started getting offers from the movie industry. Linnea’s career was born as an actress in 1978 with Sleeping Beauty. It was a soft-core sex spoof fairy tale.

It was 1985’s with Return of the Living Dead that proved to be a breakthrough in her acting career. In this movie, she played the role of a punker named, “Trash”. Her exotic dance in a graveyard at midnight garnered her much horror fan acclaim, which made her the instant success in the industry. There was no turning back then and soon she was known as the “Queen of the ‘B’s”. Her reign was explicable in the late 1980s with some of the all times hits such as Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama (1988), Nightmare Sisters (1987), Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1988), and Night of the Demons (1988). Quigley was paid only $400 for her small role in Nightmare Sisters. However, Nightmare Sisters turned out to be a good success for her as an actor. Her work as an obsessed and possessed sex bomb was highly appreciated.

Linnea Quigley’s Popular Movies – What Were They All About

Linnea Quigley has so far worked with almost 125 feature movies since she started working in Hollywood. She landed her very first role while still in her teens, and proved her worth as an actress in merely a couple of movies she did in the 80’s. Here is the list of some of most popular films.

1. Psycho from Texas (1975)
This was the first feature film of Linnea. She performed the role of a barmaid. This was Linnea’s one of the least glamorous roles. Even though, she didn’t have much to do, her small scenes didn’t go unnoticed in the industry. The movie revolved around a hitman, hired to kill a Texas oil millionaire.[amzn_product_inline asin=’B00179UY3Q’]

Linnea Quigley’s Horror Workout DVD

Horror WorkoutThe Horror Workout DVD by Linnea Quingley is the fitness video boom idea that happened to the actress accidentally. During the shoot of Murder Weapon in 1989, when the director Kenneth J. Hall cracked a joke about how the repeated use of Sledgehammer by Linnea in one of the death scenes, resembles a workout, Quigley’s mind made instant plans to launch her own version of workout DVD’s. This throwaway joke became a great idea and the instant hit, right after the launch.

Essentially, the DVD follows the format of every other successful fitness video, only with added trademarks of Quigley v.i.z nudity, zombies and gore. This one hour-long workout DVD is built around three routines. The workout sequences are delivered in a fairly straightforward manner. Quigley is the main attraction of the workout, and it has been said that the video targets more to spectatorship than actual participation. Her presence is incredibly endearing.

Linnea Quigley’s Horror Workout is released by The Fright Film Factory via the Legacy Features’ website. The DVD also comes with a signed photo of Linnea Quigley and Hall. Linnea’s DVD out rated all the other fitness DVD’s in the market at the time of the launch. The choreography in the video was highly appreciated, and considered to be unique in its own way. You won’t see some skinny girl exercising in loose hoodies, rather you see a gracious lady working out to keep herself toned and maintain her ravishing sex appeal. Her fan following has tremendously increased after the launch of Horror Workout DVD.

Frozen: A Short Story of Horror (Book Review)

October 5, 2013 By Horror Palace Leave a Comment

Frozen by Rachelle Bronson“Frozen: A Short Story of Horror,” written by Rachelle Bronson, is a mind gripping read where the plot is thick and rich and the pace never lets up.  Bronson does an outstanding job of building a story that leaves readers constantly guessing, anxious and engaged.  Her writing style is detailed and focused heavily on tone, using imagery that matches the mood of every part of the novel.  The descriptions of settings are thorough and the development of the characters flawless, bringing the story to life every step of the way.

This book is about a character named Mackenzie Skillman, an archaeologist who puts retirement on hold to further investigate the discovery of a being’s human-like remains which have been located frozen in the Himalayan Mountains.  Determined to take part in discovering the paleo-anthropological find of the century, Skillman embarks on a mountain climbing journey with a guide and a crew of others interested in researching the corpse.  All they know is that the remains of this creature has been perfectly preserved due to freezing.  While they do eventually find the body, partly human and partly a foreign species, there are many struggles in doing so.  Along the way, the group encounters terrifying life threatening struggles and the expedition turns out to be much more dangerous than anyone could have imagined.  There are concussions, near-death experiences, actual deaths and more, making “Frozen” a book that is never short on exciting content.

First, Bronson chose an extremely interesting choice in terms of the presentation of this book.  A short story, the author wrote this book in a way that makes 133 pages feel meaty enough to tell a full story yet condensed enough to be a quick and enjoyable read.  The book is written in very large font, leaving less text to a page and making the book feel as though it is moving along faster.  This simulates a faced-paced speed, adding to the action, intensity and excitement level for the reader.  The presentation choice was definitely unique and really added a lot to the novel.

Rachelle Bronson Headshot
Rachelle Bronson, Author

Also, the book is written with intricate descriptions and imagery throughout which bring forth the sometimes disturbing elements of horror present in the story.  Bronson does not hesitate to paint us a clear picture of bloody, gruesome, terrifying scenes which really bring the plot to life.  There are vividly explained images of amputations, injury, dangerous falls and preserved cadavers spread out throughout the novel as to occasionally grab the reader’s attention and disturb them.  However, the gruesome and scary details are well dispersed so that there is an element of suspense or surprise and the content is not consistently upsetting which allows for the development of the plot line.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book for all readers who enjoy suspenseful and adventurous stories.  The plot is extremely well developed and action packed, focusing on a mountain climbing expedition and the horrors that come about when things do not go exactly as planned.  The author has fine attention to detail and ensures that every disturbing scene is depicted descriptively, that every character is well introduced and utilized in the story and that every moment while reading is absolutely captivating.  Her writing style definitely leaves readers constantly wanting more.  Also, the actual physical presentation of the book is unique and suits the genre, plus it is written phenomenally well, making the reading experience even more pleasant.  “Frozen: A Short Story of Horror,” written by Rachelle Bronson, is a fast-paced and adventurous read that will grab your attention and not let go until the end.
