THE LOWER ANGELS World Premiere at NYC Horror Film Festival

November 7, 2014 By Horror Palace Leave a Comment

tla_hori_posterTHE LOWER ANGELS, a Good Luck Films production, written and directed by Adam Hardman, has been chosen to be an Official Selection of the 2014 NYC Horror Film Festival.  The premiere will shown on Sunday, November 16 at 3:00PM.

A killer on the loose and a monster in the form of a man are preying nightly on young women in the streets of New York City.  Together they descend into a world of blood, lust, revenge and murder. Haily wakes in a cloud of confusion. Where is she? What happened to her? She has nothing but a fragmented nightmare. She was drugged and raped, and left in some shit hole apartment building. No one will help her, or will they? Gabriella kills men so regularly it has become boring. She rips out their throats, drinks their blood, and feasts on their memories.  Gabriella can give Haily the power to take revenge on the man who raped her, but will she condemn Haily to an eternity of darkness? Running from the sunrise, tortured by the past, with bloody mouths and hungry knives Gabriella and Haily find a truth neither wants to face.

Brutal, seductive, and intelligent, The Lower Angels is an unconventional vampire story destined for a place in the cult classic canon.

Director: Adam Hardman
Writer: Adam Hardman
Stars: Cole Marshall, Shanti Carson, Liz Fye

Killer Twin Clowns

November 7, 2014 By Horror Palace Leave a Comment

killer-twin-clownsAs a typical Gemini combination, one is dark and the other is light. In order to reach a middle ground the happy one plays out a comedic show for the ignorant audience while the other engages in a stabbing rampage. When the painful shrieks increase in volume so does the intensity of the show. Their mission is to create a juxtaposition where the audience can’t help but laugh while they bleed to death. It’s the perfect internal conflict, mixing pleasure and pain.

A Dark and Winding Road (Book Review)

November 6, 2014 By Horror Palace Leave a Comment

featured-reviews-smal

a-dark-and-winding-road-coverThe collection of short stories entitled “A Dark and Winding Road”, written by Matthew Weber, is refreshing to say the least. It’s great to find a writer that is able to complement his original ideas with a superb talent for writing. He has truly breathed new life into a genre that has been lacking creatively on so many levels.

The first story “Guard the Park” takes you down an unsuspecting path where the end cannot be predicted. It is simply impossible to know what is going to happen next. As an opening number it is one of the most beautiful tales of horror ever written and it gives the reader a pretty good idea of what to expect from the rest of the stories. Then comes the second story entitled “The Shady Brake Baptist Fall Festival” and once again the reader can only keep reading in order to reveal the unpredictable ending. The demeanor of his characters and the tiny details that make them so real is astonishing. These touches are used in every story.

The plots of the stories have no real relation except maybe for the town in which these events occur. It’s typically a small community and the people are every day citizens that can easily be related to. As for the subject matter, it is obvious Weber has done his homework. Whether it’s about silently breaking the window of a car or the politics that surround global warming, the detail is perfectly added. He also made a point to keep the stories as varied as possible. Moving from one story to the next is almost like reading the work of a different author every time. With impeccable pace for every scenario, Weber is able to nail the art of combining a collection of short stories.

In all honesty, it’s difficult to stop reading, because every story motivates the reader for the next one. As a 3rd person narrator, Weber slides along under the radar without drawing any attention away from the characters. Instead he makes clean breaks between interactive personalities and this allows the imaginary cinema of the reader to really take flight. His ability to paint a scene with just the right amount of description is unbelievable.

Weber states in the foreword that the content is meant to be disturbing and this is exactly what he delivers. However, he doesn’t go over the top. In fact, the disturbing aspect is only one of many that the reader will experience. Expect to empathize with almost every character and expect to emulate the fear of the victims, because Weber’s literary ability is just that good. Not once was there a moment when I thought the phrasing was forced, a mistake many horror writers make in order to produce an emotional reaction. In essence, Weber did everything right and he did it at exactly the right time.

From a critical point of view “A Dark and Winding Road” captures everything great horror writers should strive towards. It’s engaging, thought provoking and most importantly, horrific. From a personal point of view, the next book I read is going to have a tough time stacking up to this collection.

Bill Oberst, Jr. Wins Lon Chaney Award for “Outstanding Achievement”

November 6, 2014 By Horror Palace Leave a Comment

Ron-Chaney-Bill-Oberst-Jr-Award-CeremonyThe 2014 Fantastic Horror Film Festival has come to a close and the winners of this year’s celebration have been announced. Included in this year’s awards, Bill Oberst Jr. has won a Lon Chaney Award for “Outstanding Achievement in Independent Horror Films.” With over a hundred film credits, Bill Oberst Jr. continues to take the horror film world by storm, with upcoming appearances and performances in: Slay Utterly, Squeal: Blood Harvest and the upcoming At Granny’s House – Love Hurts.

Ron Chaney, the great-grandson of Lon Chaney and the grandson of Lon Chaney Jr., was on hand along with Lon Chaney’s great-great-granddaughters Jaclynn and Jennifer to present Oberst with this first-ever award.

Festival organizers kept the award a secret to surprise Oberst, who has often cited Lon Chaney as a major influence and expressed a desire to play The Man Of A Thousand Faces on stage or screen. The actor was nearly speechless as Ron Chaney called him forward at the FHFF Awards Banquet. “My inner 14 year-old horror kid is in overdrive right now,” he said. “Without the Chaney family there would be no horror genre.”

Ron Chaney, speaking for the family, thanked the FHFF crowd for helping to keep the Chaney cinematic legacy alive. “We are honored to be here tonight to present this first ever Lon Chaney Award in the spirit and in the memory of my grandfather and great-grandfather,” he said.Chaney is President & CEO of Chaney Entertainment, Inc. which manages licensing rights to the two Lons, and maintains The Official Chaney Site and store
