Killer Spiders (Book Review)

April 28, 2013 By Horror Palace Leave a Comment

Killer Spiders Book CoverBook: Killer Spiders
Year: 2013
Publisher: Austin Macauley Publishers Ltd.
Author: Lex Sinclair
Language: English
Chapters: 21
Pages: 302
Type: Novel

Lex Sinclair Author PictureAuthor’s Summary: It is 2005 in Great Britain, and an invasion of venomous spiders has hit the country. Hitchhiking’ in imported food, the spiders are able to thrive in the changing climate. At first, coverage of the attack is overlooked in favor of world events, but soon the spiders begin to take over. They cover everything they come across in gigantic webs and kill everything in sight. Their favorite food? Humans. Immune to insecticides and pesticides, the spiders multiply and take over towns and villages, spreading outwards from the London sewers. Dire consequences ensue for many residents of Great Britain as they fight to keep the killer spider epidemic under control. Soon everyone is affected, and all still-living residents are made to evacuate their homes. As the spiders spread, so does the havoc they wreak and the numbers they violently kill.

Review: I loved this story immensely – it has distinct properties of a Science Fiction/Creature style movie of the long since forgotten era. It was very creative and completely vivid keeping my mind in turmoil during the entire read.

Killer Spiders is basically about an Entomologist and a few researchers that discover this type of crazy spiders (ooh I loath spiders too). One of the Scientists studies this deadly species and finds out that there not from the local territories but across state lines. The group soon try to eradicate the hairy creatures but the Scientists aren’t as smart as they look, as when they try to exterminate them, the spiders spread out into different groups keeping their survival intact, and protecting their new queen to continue onwards creating havoc in the city.

The thing about these ferocious spiders is that – all it takes is one venomous bite, which paralyzes the human body and causes a slow and painful death. During the amuck, a lone person (kept anonymous) has the fortitude to locate the leader before the birth of more deadly soldiers in the arsenal of already there being an overrun population of scary, freaky, haunting spiders about the lay of the land.

Killer Spiders is available to purchase at better book stores all over the world. The lowest price I came across for the Paperback is $13.52 at The Book Depository, a great, and not well-known book store. As a bonus, if you don’t mind reading a PDF on your computer, or if you have a Kindle or Tablet you can get the Electronic Version or E-Book Version for free. This is an outstanding book that I highly recommend to all. It has all facets of traditional horror that we have all come to love over the years. Not counting, those dark nightmares thinking there is a spider in your bed!!! This novel will have you finishing it in a flash, and it’s a longer book too, which I always like. It keeps your mind wandering after its finished. Put very, very, very simply, get this book today, you won’t be disappointed. My ratings, suggestions and links are below.

Hide Review

November 24, 2011 By Horror Palace Leave a Comment

Hide Cover PosterMovie: Hide
Year: 2011
Studio: Brandi Brothers Productions
Director: Jamison Brandi
Language: English
Length: 84 Minutes
Sub-Genre: Slasher

Plot: A high-school cheerleader and her friends become embroiled in a lethal game of hide and seek on Mischief Night, the night before Halloween, even though a statewide curfew has been in effect since a horrific murder just a year before.

Review: I was excited when I popped the DVD in for Hide as it sounded like a current day slasher, and I value the sub-genre highly. It is the category that got me into horror in the first place. But, and this is a big but, Hide simply manages to screw-up the slasher scenario almost on every front.

The whole concept to Hide is one that does work, a masked killer, always a positive, is stalking young teenage girls while prodding them on the phone with obscenities ala Scream. During the final conversations he tells the girls we are going to play Hide and Seek, the popular childhood game. As the charade begins the killer is stalking his victims as he is counting out loud, 1 – 1000, 2 – 1000, 3 – 1000 and so on, until he finds them and ultimately kills them.

As a slasher you expect to see some kills, you see absolutely nothing. Not only that the story goes back-and-forth between many characters in effect losing the tension that slashers bring. The scariness of Hide is basically non-existent. It’s a pity too because some of the characters did have a likability factor but the build-ups were overly drawn out and poorly executed. More negatives include; overused score that got annoying 20 minutes in, then you got a whole hour left with the same music, and the story shifts amongst characters and one of these are filmed in a crappy cinematic style with sepia tones and shaky cam to the point you have no idea what is happening.

Hide is a new DVD release that hit the shelves on the end of October, and I am here to tell you, as a total slasher fan, pass this one by and walk away. The movie is redundant, weak and overall a very poor horror movie. If you are looking for a current day slasher that will scare you, I will throw out a few suggestions for you; Chain Letter and Hatchet 2.
