Creepypasta is essentially an internet horror story. They were originally posted on forums and other websites with the intention of frightening readers. The term “Creepypasta” is derived from an internet slang term “copypasta” (copy & paste), which is text that’s copied and pasted many times from site to site – often supplemented with photos, audios and videos, typically with gory and shocking content.
Here are some of the original “Creepy Pasta” subjects:
– Anecdotes: The narrator highlights a scary legend, event or news story from their own past.
– Rituals: The reader is provided with a list of instructions suggesting that something remarkable or horrifying will happen if they visit a particular place at a particular time, and perform certain actions.
– The Lost Episode: Here, the narrator presents a story of a never-before-seen scene or episode from a popular TV show, often a comedy or cartoon, with heavily distorted audio and video, and characters start acting violently or strangely, killing themselves or each other. This creepypasta style is no longer popular today, as it is considered as cliché.
As older CreepyPastas were short and followed had limited guidelines, today, the subject has broaded and varies greatly in quality and length from early versions.
Examples of CreepyPasta
Mereana Mordegard Glesgorv
This creepypasta is about a video which made hundreds of people to kill themselves and send their eye balls to YouTube Headquarters through mail, though they were dead. In the video, there is an image of a man in front of a red background. After a while, you will start hearing noises that sound like a high-pitched drill.
Slenderman
This a creepypasta-based character which originated from the 2009 Something Awful Forums. The Slenderman is described as an extremely tall noppera-bō with a thin body and gentleman’s suit who kidnaps his victims (often children) for unknown reasons, and sometimes sets ablaze the place where he has captured his victims.
Smile Dog
A photo of a dog which has a bloody hand and human teeth that causes its viewers to kill themselves. The origins of the photo can be traced to a blog post of unknown user finding a female viewer who killed herself after viewing the photo. In the spirit of the dog’s advice to spread the word, the user posted the photo virally.
Zalgo
These are images of real and fictional characters with black stuff oozing from their mouths and eyes, often believed to have been modified by an eyeless, multiple-mouthed, blob-like abomination who calls himself Zalgo.
Candle Cove
This creepypasta is presented in a forum thread form where members discuss a scary children’s show known as Candle Cove which aired sometime in 70’s. In the end, one of the forum members reveals that the show was actually not real, but some form of mass hallucination.
BEN Drowned
This a 4-chapter story of a Majora’s Mask cartridge being haunted by Ben, the past cart owner. Each chapter has its own video. After buying Majora’s Mask cartridge from an old man, the narrator starts to observe seizure-like images and unusual connections to Ben, a child who drowned in a lake. This story has been one of the most logical creepypastas as there are many .avi videos which confirm the man’s claims.
